Background checks on Students

According to an article on nbc17.com

Background Checks On UNC Students Urged
Only Five Of 35 U.S. Universities Surveyed Conduct Background Checks

A state senator wants to make the University of North Carolina system the first in the country to require all incoming students to submit to background checks.

Two UNC-Wilmington students were killed on campus within weeks of each other two years ago. It was later determined that the man charged in one of the slayings lied on his college application about his history of mental problems and violence.

The senator must believe that since businesses are conducting background checks, then why shouldn't universities? Part of the problem is that most college applicants with a record under age 18 will be protected by privacy laws. Background checks would only be effective on older applicants.
